Advertising Portfolio

Collection of projects completed during BA Advertising program at Drake University

Shameless Self

Promo

The idea behind this ad was to sell myself to potential employers. I wanted to make a simple and visually appealing way to grab the readers attention. I figured the best way to do that was with a large photo at the top of the document. The copy itself was written to read as an abbreviated cover letter or elevator pitch, quickly pointing out the most important aspects of who I am and what I bring to the table. The tagline implies that I am a team player and work well with others to complete projects.

I wanted to have an ad that summarized my abilities without overcrowding the document with text. I put my name and the 3 words that describe me the best at the top and with a larger font for those who just skim the page. I felt it was important to have my email address for direct contact as well as showing that I am on certain social media sites if they want to see more of what I am about.

Paper Clip

Positioning

The idea behind this assignment was to create an advertisement for a paperclip sold at the Drake University Bookstore. I decided to modify the product a little bit and make it a luxury paper clip to appeal to college students and/or parents that have more money. I thought this product could be used to hold your resume and cover letter together when you hand it to a potential employer. Parents could buy one for their graduating student as a gift, similar to a class ring.

Paperclip

Positioning

I wanted to keep the design of this ad simple. I used a design that is similar to those that jewelers use to sell their high-end products. Those that have money do not need as much convincing to buy expensive products. I photoshopped the diamond encrusted paper clip in a Tiffany look-alike ring box and stated the facts about the product. The tagline "Be Exceptional" is used to convey that this paper clip is far superior to any other.

Rook Room Radio

Ad

This is the radio advertisement that our group used in the first round of presentations. Annie Berwald did a fantastic job writing the script for this ad that chosen to advance to the final decision round. I chose this assignment for the portfolio because I am the one who produced it. I thought it would be a good idea to showcase some production skills as well as writing copy and designing.

As Seen On TV

Radio Ad

The purpose of this assignment was to recreate an advertisement for an obscure product in a more effective way. The original ad for the Pocket Hose Silver Bullet (a compact, lightweight hose that expands when water flows through it) was all over the place. I condensed it down to selling only a couple benefits and redefined the target audience. Usually the As Seen On TV products have unbelievable scenarios to demonstrate why the product is needed. I created a humorous way to sell the product while providing a realistic situation in which the product can be used.

BAJMC Online Video

We as a class were hired by Drake University to advertise for the new online Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication program. There were many mediums we used to accomplish this, but I believe the most important element was our informational video. The video highlights that the online program is from a prestigious institution and customizable to students' individual needs. Dean Richardsonis the narrator to emphasize the faculty is welcoming and able to help students. The entire video meets the campaign strategy, with the objective being helping individuals earn a bachelor's degree from a prestigious institution in a program that is customizable to their individual needs. Every shot resonates with the strategy's support: "asynchronous courses, flexible schedules, and full faculty resources at an accredited national university"
